1Buyer Beware if you ship packages
    By Max Lent
The Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo works great. What doesn't work well is the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels." Everything works great until you want to purchase postage for your package you are shipping. With the free software provided you can print a wide range of pre-selected postage amounts, but you cannot print a specific dollar amount. To ship your Priority Mail package with the correct amount of postage, you will still have to go to the Post Office or purchase a $9.95 monthly service plan. Of course, this is not explained to you until after you purchase the unit and set up your account. In my opinion the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels" is clearly bait and switch. If you ship a few packages a month, the monthly service charge is not worth the cost.

    1Deceptive marketing at its finest
    By Bill
The one and only reason I purchased this label printer was for the highly touted Dymo Stamps feature, supposedly giving you the ability to print your own postage stamps onto thermal postage labels for no monthly fee, only the cost of the printer and the thermal label refills. According to the Dymo Stamps website, Dymo Stamps gives you the ability to "Print Exactly the Amount of Postage you Need" and "Eliminate the Need for Costly Postal Meters." What the consumer is not told upfront is that these "precise" amounts of postage can only be in denominations of the Dymo Stamps software's choosing, not any amount you want. In fact, the only postage denominations that can be printed are those already available in stamp form at the post office, basically just your run-of-the-mill $0.39 stamps, $4.05 Priority Mail stamps, and postcard stamps. This software also does not give you the capability to print postage for Parcel Post, Media Mail, or Express Mail, and doesn't allow you to add additional postage for services like insurance or certified mail at all. How this saves you any trouble over buying stamps from the post office is beyond me. Conveniently, you can only overcome all of these limitations by subscribing to Endicia (Dymo Stamps' backbone provider) for a monthly fee. Heck, you can't even go to an office supply store to buy the thermal postage label refills that you need to print postage on; they can only be ordered online through a link in the Dymo Stamps software. Especially given the fact that even the least expensive Dymo Stamps capable LabelWriter model is over $100, this will NOT save you any money in postage, will NOT save you any time, and ordering stamps online from USPS (or getting them from the local post office) is just as convenient, if not more convenient, than ordering the stupid thermal refills online from Dymo and waiting for them to arrive. Thankfully, Amazon is great at accepting returns.

    5Great! Saves time & space!
    By A. Gilman
I have been using Stamps.com for my online business for about 2 years. Up till now I have been printing postage using a standard laser printer. Using this method I had to load individual sheets to print just 1 label, and often had paper jams, which sometimes resulted in lost postage funds. Not anymore! This dymo 400 turbo works flawlessly with stamps.com and prints individual postage labels in seconds. No more messing around with label sheets and loading trays. Best of all it doesn't use any toner, it uses thermal label rolls. (Laser toner is expensive) The 3-part postage label rolls are quite inexpensive, and the print quality is excellent. This baby should be paying for itself within 6 months. Cut my packing & shipping time almost to half. BTW, it also includes it's own software for making custom labels.

    5Handy, fun, practical
    By Barb Smith
This is possibly the best little electronic device ever invented! I've had mine for 10 years it seems. I've labeled everything in my house I can think of - garbage disposal switch, light switch next to it. License Plate # on the back of my Driver's License. Phone # on the back of my phone. Kids love it! They put their name in and label small toys or whatever.

    4Good little gadget
    By HKS
Overall this product works very well. I only gave it 4 stars as some times the paper roll jams and you have to open it and pull out the chewed bit but this has always happened when I've used the scissor cut button and then not advanced the roll a little before typing the next text. Aside from this quirk, it works very well. The lettering is clear and easy to read. I have used the Dymo iron on label roll and it works well too, I used this on my son's socks (on the sole) and a year on and many washes, the labels are still stuck onto the fabric - the writing is getting a little worn, but considering the the location and the amount of dirt that gets on them, I'm impressed.

5A Superb Product! Works flawlessly with Mac OS X too!
    By Alan Taylor
I was quite skeptical when purchasing this product. Usually hardware that says it's PC & Mac compatible falls short on one of those platforms. Not so here... this little printer works like a charm on my iMac. It's a breeze to install, paper is easy to load, and the software is both graphically pleasing and incredibly easy to use. You can copy and paste addresses right into the program and it will check to see if it is a valid address, add the +4 to your zip codes automatically, and even print the USPS barcode on the label for faster sorting. It even integrates with Mac OS X and allows you to print labels by selecting anyone in your Mac's address book. Also, printing your own postage is a huge convenience. There is no extra cost for buying postage online, just the cost of the label, which if bought in bulk or manufactured by a third party, is really quite cheap. For the convenience of not having to go to the post office to buy stamps, the cost of the labels is a fair trade-off. It makes addressing packages and envelopes a total pleasure instead of a hassle. You can also use the included USB scale to automatically calculate postage based on weight. This will calculate shipping for first class, as well as priority and express mail service. All around an excellent product and well worth the price.

Two Important Tips: 1) When installing a new roll of labels, there will be some sticky residue left from the glue put there to keep the spool from unraveling. Peel off the label with the sticky stuff on it before feeding it through your printer to prevent the residue getting on the paper feed roller. If the glue gets on the roller, it is likely to cause paper jams. 2) This printer uses thermal paper, not ink. The labels are best used for shipping, or things that require temporary labeling (less than six months). These labels WILL fade after time, and will fade very quickly if left in direct sunlight or in an overly hot environment. This is not a shortcoming of this printer, but of thermal paper technology in general. If you are looking to use this for long term labeling, I would recommend using a different labeler like a Brother P-Touch.

    1Don't buy this
    By ktnc
Wow, this thing is a frustrating piece of junk. It would work in theory, but in practice it is a big headache. Every time my machine is unplugged and then plugged in again (there's no on/off switch to conserve power), the right side roll form feeds the ENTIRE ROLL of blank stamp labels through the machine. These are expensive and I don't want to waste them so I have to re-roll the labels by hand and put them back in the machine. Then the next time it just unrolls the whole thing again and spits them all over my desk.

I also can't get the machine to print a stamp on the right side roll--it says the machine is out of labels, though there is a full roll properly loaded into the machine. So there's 44 cents down the drain.

Furthermore, I wanted to use it for Internet shipping, but the labels that come with the printer aren't supported by Endicia, the postal software that this thing runs on. To print delivery confirmation or return address, you need a different kind of label. On top of that, Dymo makes an even bigger shipping label that also fits this size printer but isn't supported by Endicia. How frustrating and pointless is that?

The scale works well and runs off your computer's power so that part was cool, but this thing is going back in the box and back to Amazon.

**UPDATE. The packages I did try to ship using the included labels and the Endicia.com software were returned to me as undeliverable. Now I have to re-do the postage on these packages and fill out some forms to apply for a postage refund. Why, why, why do they not include the correct labels for mailing via Endicia.com?**

    5Works great, no problems!
    By Travis Dockweiler
Works great. I never used the included software though. I got sick of waiting in line at the post office so I bought this to print out postage. I use a software from my postage provider and can print out postage for any type of package. I just wish that Dymo offered a label for printing just the postage and not the postage with an address. I've figured that each postage and address label costs me 10 cents total (for both). Not bad really.

Another great thing about this is that it doesn't require ribbons or ink! It's not super fast at printing, but printing out a dozen labels doesn't take much time at all. Not fast, but certainly not slow.

4A very good, basic label printer.
    By Steven A. Godun
I bought the printer for one reason: to create shipping labels for my eBay items. I'd previously been using Avery inkjet labels with my inkjet printer, which worked but it was an annoyance to have to print only one or two labels at a time. THE GOOD: Absolutely no problems with the printer, getting it to work, etc. It has a very small footprint which I like, and it's very quiet when printing. It even comes with a roll of address labels. THE BAD: None significant, although the address labels are useless to me since I'll be doing nothing but shipping labels with it. The included software on the CD was old (updates available on the Dymo web site) but that holds true for pretty much everything in the computer industry. The software has some good features (mailing lists, and the ability to use the OS X Address Book database), but otherwise it's pretty minimal and limited, particularly in its design capabilities. This would have gotten five stars if it wasn't for the software, which feels like a hurried afterthought rather than a finished OS X application. (PS: Dymo has an OS X Intel-native version of the LabelWriter software that is available for download, but is NOT on the CD.)

    3Bad Software but Excellent Hardware
    By Robert R. Birge
The software for the labelwriter is truly awful and some of it damages other applications. If you use Microsoft Word with other applications that share startup manipulation of the Tools menu, you will find that the DYMO startup file, DYMOWordAddin.dot, will destroy all the other starup commands of applications such as Adobe pdfwriter, Endnote, and others. These applications will no longer appear in the menu, but the DYMO application will. This is doubly insulting because the DYMO addon is itself dysfunctional. The only safe way to create labels is to use the DYMO label application, which works reasonably well, although it too is unable to position graphics and writing with the necessary flexibility.

If you run into problems after installation, find the word startup folder and remove any addins with DYMO in them. This is a cross platform problem that involves Win XP and Mac OSX. Once the DYMO files are removed, Word returns to proper function.

The software is terrible, but the hardware is excellent. Although the labels are rather expensive, the printing is clear and crisp and one has access to all of the fonts on your computer. If is hoped that DYMO will put a greater effort into the software in the future so that their total product is as good as the hardware they sell.
